Wind Tunnel Fans Sound Off on Formula One
Dave Despain asked "Are you more or less interested in Formula One racing after the 2007 season and why?", and as usual, TunnelHeads were not shy about voicing their opinions…

  • Dave: Regardless of the decision reached on whom the 2007 F1 champion ends up being, it probably won't affect my current viewing/following F1. To put this in perspective, you can consider me a gray beard who grew to love F1 via the writings of Rob Walker and Innes Ireland in "Road and Track" in the 70's and early 80's. I revered drivers like Stewart, Andretti, Scheckter and constructors and innovators like Ken Tyrrell and Colin Chapman. Unfortunately, the more technical the car became (making the driver matter less) and the more apparent that a select few teams would rule F1 for a segment of years, the less interested I became. That level of disinterest remains today. For better or worse, I'll always be a fan, so I really can't watch or follow the sport any less without turning it off completely. And I doubt that will happen. - Jon Lamkins, Southington, CT

  • F1 can go to hell via their third world countries movement. As a Course Marshal for the GP du Canada and a spectator of three USGPs I find it scary that F-1 can choose to protect a blackmailer of their liking and change the rules to change the outcome of a race. To allow team orders to determine the race winner then dismiss their own temperature numbers makes a mockery of open wheel racing. FIA has already created their new Third World Championship / Order! - David Page, N.C. SCCA F&C

  • I would have written sooner but I had to take my mini Ferrari (Fiat) on a drive after big red won the championship. What a RACE!!!!!!! What a day. No NASCAR on TV in Los Angeles anyway. - Daniel Horenberger, Los Angeles, CA

  • Dave: As we sit here and watch the F1 post race circus my wife and I are just short of pulling the pin on our thirty year following of F1. One question I have not heard tonight is why would the driver be penalized instead of the team? - Jo & John, Aiken, SC P.S. Loooonnnnggggg time wind tunnel fans.

  • One of the best programs on live television I have ever watched. Keep it going us tunnel heads really need you. What else do you need - a rookie with a chance of winning the title on his debut, Schumacher departs, Raikkonen hops into his seat and takes up the mantle, Alonso challenges records set by the great Juan Manuel Fangio & Michael Schumacher. Italian spygate scandals. New stars Kubica & Vettel who will be able to challenge this years' other 3 title contenders. Guts at the first corner, reminiscent of Montoya's introduction to Schumacher. Controversy after the race. The only downside being Hamilton's challenge, having survived the scandal eventually fell down to an electronics gremlin. Almost sounds like we've gone back to the great 80's & early 90's. Let's hope the dramatic upturn in F1 isn't soured by the new engine rules coming in for 2008 - aren't they all running McLaren electronics...? - Julian

  • Dave: Between Stepneygate, losing the US Grand Prix, the firing of Scott Speed, and the championship having to be decided by stewards (instead of on the racetrack where it should be decided), I have completely lost interest in Formula One. I've never been a NASCAR fan, but I found it much more exciting to watch teammates Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon battle it out in Martinsville than to watch the F1 race. At least there aren't any team orders in NASCAR! Thank goodness I can still watch real racing in the American Le Mans Series and MotoGP! Cheryl, Indianapolis, IN P.S. I can't wait to see the MotoGP motorcycles racing around the Brickyard next September!
