A 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, one of the most valuable and desired cars in the world, is being marketed by RM Auctions for private sale.

With only 39 of the famous GT race cars ever produced, and with a style that still influences designs today, the impending sale of one of these iconic Ferraris is a rare and noteworthy event in itself.

The estimated value of the 250 GTO (chassis no. 4675 GT) is $25 million to $30 million, according to appraiser Dave Kinney, publisher of the Hagerty’s Cars That Matter value guide. In 2008, a 250 GTO was sold to a British buyer at auction for $25 million.

The Canada-based auction house, which has sold seven of the top-10 Ferraris ever sold at auction, conducts collector-car auctions around the world as well as selling high-end consignments in private treaty sales. RM generates an average of $50 million of private sales per year, according to the company.

The V12-powered 250 GTO models are considered among the most beautiful cars ever built by Ferrari and tremendously successful in competition, securing multiple World Championships for the Modenese car builder.

“The Ferrari GTO is unquestionably one of the most iconic and coveted cars in the world,” says Max Girardo, managing director of RM Europe. “This is truly a rare occasion for collectors to acquire such an important piece of automotive history and we are pleased to be chosen by 4675 GT’s current custodian to represent it on the open market.”

In April 1963, 4675 GT left the factory finished in Rosso Cina, one of a limited few with Series II GTO bodywork.

The car was raced by such drivers as Guido Fossati, Jean Guichet, Oddone Sigala, Vincenzo Nember and Luigi Taramazzo and proved itself a tremendously capable racing car, achieving numerous race wins and rarely finishing outside the top three in its class. It participated in the full range of competitive events, including hill climbs, endurance races and rallies.

The current owner acquired 4675 GT in 1996 and has maintained it in his exceptional, world-renowned Japanese collection ever since. Most recently, the Ferrari has participated in the ultra-private events reserved only for GTO owners, namely the 35th and 45th GTO Anniversary Tours in France and California.
