The popularity of reproduction 1965-70 Mustang body shells has prompted Ford to approve another reproduction of one of its most cherished models, this time a 1940 Ford Coupe. Like the Mustang reproductions, the new Ford Coupe comes as a shell either with its doors and hood attached or without them.

The new body shell would be used instead of locating one of the scarce, seven-decade-old originals that's most likely damaged or rusty. (Photo: Ford)
The shell is constructed of high-strength steel and assembled using modern welding techniques. The body comes fully rust-proofed from the factory and is ready to be assembled as a custom hot rod or a faithful tribute to the original.

It is available with a stock firewall that accommodates the original flathead V8, but for those looking to use a modern powertrain, it can be ordered with a recessed firewall that will allow larger engines to be installed.

The shell is available through Dennis Carpenter Ford Restoration Parts, though it doesn’t make its official debut until next week’s 2012 SEMA show, with a completed street rod built to show the possibilities.

It is priced from $11,900 for the basic model and ranges close to $15k with all the panels included. For more information, see dennis-carpenter.com.

Other reproduction bodies of classic Fords, such as the iconic ’32 models, are available from private vendors, usually destined to become hand-built hot rods.
