VINTAGE: Historic Ferraris At Villa d’Este
Two early 1950s 212 Inters were displayed, a beautiful cabriolet and a coupe used by honeymooning movie icons Roberto Rosselini and Ingrid Bergman in 1952.

Of the many Ferraris on display at Concorso d’Elegance Villa d'Este, two were Pinin Farina-bodied 212 Inters. The earliest was a cabriolet, which is the second or third Ferrari bodied by what would later become the company's carrozzeria of choice. Having benefited from a complete restoration at the hands of Ferrari Classiche, it was presented in spectacular condition.

Of slightly later vintage was a 212 coupe, which was used by Roberto Rosselini and Ingrid Bergman during their honeymoon. The legendary Italian director ordered the car new from Ferrari for the Swedish film star, and with their luggage strapped to the roof, the two drove across Europe from Rome to Sweden.

Like many of its sister cars, this 212 Inter (chassis 0265EU) was eventually exported to the United States. It was restored twice and at one point finished in “resale red.” In recent years, the lovely little Ferrari was restored to its original colors as it returned into Italian hands. With the luggage roof reinstalled, the 212 Inter was shown at the recent Concorso.

The cabriolet (chassis 0235EU) was one of the first Ferraris clothed by Pinin Farina and one of only two 212 Inters to receive this convertible bodywork by the Turin-based carrozzeria.

Ordered new by Tony Paravano, the relatively luxuriously appointed 212 Inter was raced at the 1954 1000 km race at the Nürburgring, where it finished ninth. Like so many early Ferraris, it ended up in the United States.

Passing through various hands, it eventually ended up in the collection of the current owner. He recently sent it to Ferrari Classiche for a ground-up restoration. Immediately after the work was completed, the car was entered in the 2012 Concorso Villa d'Este where it received a mention of honor in its class.

Here’s a detailed history of the Ferrari 212 Inter:

Ferrari's earliest production cars all shared common components that were first found on the Ferrari 125 S. Their exact specification and dimensions varied to create individual models. From 1948 two distinct model lines were available, the 166 MM and the 166 Inter.

Although both names refer to famous race victories (the 1948 Mille Miglia and the Copa Intereuropa that same year), only the 166 MM was sold as a full race car. With a milder engine and longer wheelbase, the Inter was considered a road car.

Both models sported a 2-liter version of the Gioacchino Colombo-designed V12 engine. The 166 in the type name referred to the unitary displacement of the engine in cubic centimeters. The milder street spec used just one Weber Carburetor. This was sufficient to draw 115 horsepower from the all-aluminum single-overhead-camshaft engine.
