VINTAGE: Black Beauties At Barrett-Jackson
Three magnificent Buick Riviera Gran Sports roll over the block at the Las Vegas auction.

One of the highlights of Friday’s action at the Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Collector Car event was a beautiful trio of Buick Riviera Gran Sports, one each from 1965, 1967 and 1973.

The Gran Sports were the rarest of the Riviera models, high-end models with the biggest and most powerful engines available in each respective year. These specific Gran Sports were even more unusual in that they were ordered in black on black paint schemes.

All three cars were custom ordered new — and all heavily optioned — by the same owner, a man in Colorado who held onto all of them instead of trading then in. When he passed away, they were sold as part of his estate to the Frank Collection.

The 1965 Riviera, one of only 3,354 Gran Sports built that year, sold for $42,900. It was equipped with Buick’s Super Wildcat engine, a 425-cubic-inch motor that produced 360 horsepower and had two four-barrel carburetors. It is loaded with air conditioning, automatic transmission, power windows and seats.

The top seller of the three was the 1967 Riviera, which went for $51,150. This one came with the 430-cubic-inch engine, also rated at 360 horsepower. The engine was powerful enough to propel it from zero to 60 miles per hour in 7.8 seconds. Like the others, it was also ordered with virtually all the desirable options.

Last but certainly not least, the 1973 boat tail Riviera featured the extremely rare Stage I high-performance option. This had the top engine offered, a 455-cubic-inch big block producing 260 horsepower. Among its myriad options was a factory sunroof. It brought $31,900.
