KUSTOM KRAZE: While perfectly restored vintage cars with original engines, transmissions and other parts are highly prized, for a large segment of the collector-car market, modified cars are the hot ticket at the 42nd annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector-Car Event. Why? Because they can actually be driven without fear.

Resto-mods, as they are known in the hobby, combine classic looks with modern mechanical bits. Having a car with a contemporary engine, brakes and suspension generally results in a much better driving experience than an old car with its stock 50s and 60s technology. Plus you don’t have to worry about damaging irreplaceable original parts and pieces.

A good case in point is this 1961 Corvette, which has a modern 5.7-liter V8, Tremec 5-speed manual transmission, updated suspension and Wilwood drilled front and rear power disc brakes. It also has an Al Knoch custom interior with special seats, Vintage Air, power windows, CD changer, aluminum radiator and electric fans. Purists might cringe, but this is almost certainly a great driver.

LEADING MAN: It was 26 degrees out this morning in Scottsdale, which hasn’t deterred some hardy souls from checking out the action on this very quiet day. The auction closes to the public at 3 p.m. local time, in preparation for tonight’s Opening Night Gala, which is by invitation only.

Still, today is the best chance to see cars without the huge crowds that will grow daily as the week goes on. We took the opportunity to check out the amazing Salon Car collection, the big-dollar cars that will bring huge money on Saturday.

One of the favorites is the Clark Cable’s 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. This is a fantastic specimen that carried many of Hollywood’s leading ladies back in the day. This is going to be a huge event.

QUIET DAY: Monday is a down day at the 42nd annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector-Car Event, open to the public only until 3 pm Arizona time. The auction action begins Tuesday, with SPEED’s live television coverage and SPEED.com’s live streaming starting at 7 p.m. ET. Check back tomorrow for frequent updates from what's sure to be a huge event.

STAR OF THE SHOW: Without question, the biggest attraction for the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector-Car Event’s Family Value Day benefitting Cox Charities is the original George Barris-built Batmobile, which will be auctioned off on Saturday. All day long, men, women and children have flocked around the iconic car from the “Batman” television show, which aired from Jan. 12, 1966 to March 14, 1968, a total of 120 episodes.

Although “Batman” was one of the campiest television shows of all time, for some reason the Batmobile has captured the fascination of the crowd and even the national media. This car has generated a huge amount of attention and when it crosses the block live on SPEED, you can bet it will fetch top dollar. Will it be the top seller of the auction? You’re just going to have to tune in and watch.

SHELBY’S RULE THE ROOST: The late, great Carroll Shelby loved Barrett-Jackson and vice versa Barrett-Jackson Chairman and CEO Craig Jackson even named his daughter Shelby. This year, though, the Shelby presence is especially high with 59 Shelby vehicles slated to cross the block. And those vehicles represent a huge cross section: There are Cobras, GT500s and GT350s a plenty, as well as rarities like a Dodge Shelby CSX-VNT; a Shelby GT-H; a Shelby GT boat; a Shelby Limited Edition Dodge Viper; a couple of Mustang-based Super Snakes and a whole flock of tributes, resto-mods, continuation cars and more.

The best of the best? That’s likely to be a one-off prototype known among Shelby fans as “The Green Hornet,” or more correctly the Shelby EXP 500.

THE FIRST SUV: There are all kinds of exotic, rare and valuable vehicles at this year’s 42nd annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector-Car Event. And while there are plenty of cars to satisfy even the fussiest buyers, some are just as fun as they are valuable. A good case in point is a wild 1946 Cadillac woody sedan known as the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans “Honeymoon Dream Car.” From the horns on the hood to the cowhide on the seats and the camping gear in the trunk, this thing is just plain crazy. And crazy in a good way. Just awesome.

GETTING BUSY: Even though cars aren’t crossing the auction block today at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector-Car Event, there’s still lots to do during Family Value Day benefitting Cox Charities, as the huge crowd attests to. The Autocross course is hopping, with drives available in Corvettes from the Bondurant School and Shelby GT500s from Ford. Judging by some of the laps I saw — and the burning rubber I smelled — people are having great fun.

And if you like to shop, you can buy everything from an airplane to fine art — in some cases very fine art — jewelry, beds, scooters. You name it, they’ve got it. Why, there’s even a manikin vendor with some funny and cool life-sized and nearly lifelike models.

The food is awesome, too. Everything from Maine lobster rolls to giant sausages, turkey legs, Italian and Asian cuisine. Lots and lots of good choices here, for sure.

Still, the cars are the real stars of the show, and we’re just getting started.

READY TO ROCK: Today is Family Value Day benefitting Cox Charities at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale. There are no cars for sale today, but it’s a great opportunity for fans to walk the grounds and see the amazing collection of cars this year. Already, there are a lot of people coming in. As always, there’s no shortage of things to see and do here.

I expect a remarkable week here. SPEED will have 39 hours of live television coverage and SPEED.com will provide plenty of live updates as well.

On Thursday, Hagerty Fantasy Bid begins. One lucky player chosen at random will win this custom 800+ horsepower 2013 Ford Shelby GT500.
