Barrett-Jackson is launching a new auction event that will happen this August in Reno Tahoe, Nev., linked up with the wild annual Hot August Nights collector-car festival.

The new Reno auction will replace the current Orange County Fairgrounds auction in Costa Mesa, Calif., which was canceled for this year.

Craig Jackson, Barrett-Jackson chairman and CEO, said Sunday that holding an auction during the highly popular Hot August Nights was a longstanding goal, and that the organizers of the event and the Reno mayor had been pursuing Barrett-Jackson’s partnership.

The 10-day collection of Hot August Nights events, which marks its 27th year in August, attracts hundreds of thousands of old-car enthusiasts.

“We participated in Hot August Nights this year, and our sponsors loved it,” Jackson said during a press conference at the ongoing Scottsdale auction.

The new event, called the “Hot August Nights Auction Presented by Barrett-Jackson,” will be held Aug. 8-10 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.

The Reno/Tahoe area is rich with car hobbyists and major collectors, Jackson said, so that a full-scale Barrett-Jackson auction is a natural for the area. Another smaller auction had been holding events during the festival in the past, though not in recent years.

The new Hot August Nights will be the second event in Nevada for Barrett-Jackson, which also holds a major annual auction in Las Vegas in the fall. In all, Barrett-Jackson holds four auctions during the year in Scottsdale, Ariz.; Palm Beach, Fla.; Las Vegas; and now, Reno Tahoe.

Jackson said that several factors prompted Barrett-Jackson’s departure from the OC Fairgrounds. The auction had simply outgrown the fairgrounds, he said, and the event had become fraught with difficult and expensive logistics issues.

And this year, the only weekend available for the auction conflicted with coverage by SPEED, which will be covering the 24 Hours of Le Mans racing in France at that time. SPEED provides live TV programming and special features for all Barrett-Jackson auctions.

The August schedule is also an improvement, Jackson said, providing a longer gap after the annual Palm Beach auction as well as coming just before the annual collector-car activities in Monterey, Calif.
