Porsche enthusiasts heading to Monterey for the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance weekend should check out Mecum's Daytime Auction. The event will feature several hundred cars, most notably, 40 Porsches.

A Can-Am championship-winning Porsche 917/10 Spyder in L&M livery will headline the event. The car debuted at Mosport in 1972 and dominated the race schedule, taking first place in five of the year's nine contests in the hands of George Follmer.

The car was sold by Roger Penske Enterprises to Rinzler Motoracing and was campaigned as the No. 16 RC Cola car for the 1973 season. It's powered by a 5.4-liter twin-turbo 12-cylinder engine capable of more than 1,150 hp. That engine should make the car good for a 0-to-100-mph time of 2.9 seconds. The 917 was also the only Can-Am Championship-winning car not to have been powered by Chevrolet.

Also crossing the block is a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS. The RS was produced in limited numbers for homologation purposes. This car is one of the 200 lightweight versions that came without leather seats, a radio or a sunroof. It was 158th out of the 200-car run.

It has a fully documented ownership history, tracing its roots from a doctor in Germany to a pilot in Denmark and finally to the United States, where it has been a part of a private collection. It has received a full “concours restoration” by Porsche experts in Germany, and the correct engine was provided by aftermarket company Ruf. It was honored as the Best Example of the Breed at the Carrera RS 20th anniversary parade at Hockenheim, Germany. The RS should sell for about $375,000.

Another stellar lot is Bob Akin's 1986 Porsche 962, chassis No. 113. Its inaugural race was at the Watkins Glen three-hour race in July 1985 when it qualified second. The highlight of car's history is its win at Sebring when Akin, Hans Stuck and Australian Jo Gartner drove it to victory, breaking records for distance covered and average miles per hour that still stand today.

The car has received an engine rebuild in 2002 from Porsche Motorsport, which maintains the car. Since then, it has seen fewer than 20 hours of running time. We don't expect this one to be cheap; in May, a 1984 Porsche 962 sold for almost $2 million.

The Mecum Daytime Auction at Monterey will be held at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa from Aug. 16-18. The gates open at 8 a.m. each day for previews, and the auction gets under way at 10 a.m. Check out www.mecum.com for more information.
