SPEED Series ‘Chop Cut Rebuild’ Nominated For Daytime Emmy Award
Popular car-project show in production for its ninth season; award to be presented at the Daytime Emmy Awards Show on June 23.

SPEED’s popular build show, Chop Cut Rebuild, has been nominated for a Daytime Television Emmy Award in the Outstanding Lifestyle Program category. Competing against four others, a winner will be tapped during the 39th annual Daytime Emmy Awards Show on June 23 held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.

Executive Producer Dan Woods, who also hosts the show, and Co-Executive Producer Edward Peghin were recognized in the nominating announcement.

“At first, it was disbelief,” Woods said. “Particularly when I went to the Emmys website and I saw that we were in the same category as Martha Stewart. I thought, ‘Wow,’ pretty good company there.”

Woods is no stranger to success, as he previously played Mr. Raditch, the cantankerous English teacher, on the Emmy Award-winning and popular teenage dramas, DeGrassi and DeGrassi: The Next Generation. Along with Chop Cut Rebuild, Woods has created Classic Car Restorations, Street Tuner Challenge, SPEED specials entitled American Seduction and feature-film presentations.

Veteran producer Edward Peghin has devised numerous television and feature film offerings, including the highly successful animation series, Atomic Betty.

“We are pleased and proud of the prestigious recognition the Emmy nomination brings Dan and Edward,” said Robert Ecker, SPEED VP of Programming and Executive Producer. “That’s quite an honor for a series that continues to run long and strong.”

Chop Cut Rebuild, currently shooting its ninth season, follows the construction of two project cars from start to finish. Each of the 13 episodes chronicles every level of the build, combining education, storylines and entertainment into each half-hour presentation. The show originally started in Toronto, evolving into one of the most popular automotive build shows on television today, and is an important part of SPEED’s weekend morning of Engine Block programming. “I think it’s because Chop Cut Rebuild has focused on the work, more than the personalities,” Woods said. “It’s probably not the type of show that’s going to get a ‘best host’ or a ‘best performer’ nomination because we focus on the documentation of the car going from ignored to restored. That is the kind of content, the kind of information that audiences always want.”

Woods gave a preview of what to expect later this year.

“The new season is a mix of new and old,” Woods said. “We selected one of the most popular brands of vehicles you could ever hope to choose, the Chevy Tri-Five, or the 1955, ’56 and ’57 Chevrolet Bel-Airs and Nomads. We’re targeting a very, very popular car.

“Then we’re also taking a vehicle that didn’t garner the same recognition as some of the traditional muscle cars – the Nova brand from GM,” Woods continued. “The Nova was traditionally looked at as the car you bought if you couldn’t afford the Camaro. The Nova was capable of being built with as much power and handling capability of any Camaro out there. It was an extremely popular car because of its price point when it was first produced.

“The Nova offered a lot more flexibility to the public as well. You could get a four-door, six-cylinder Nova and make it a family car, or you could make a sportier car with the many variations that were available. It did reach a really wide consumer base.”

One of the primary reasons for the show’s success is how it’s evolved throughout the years, and for Season 9, additional changes are on the way.

“One of the things we’re looking at doing is eliminating all the vehicles I drive up in every segment,” Woods said. “We’re going to get right into the work, but we’re not going to forget the eye candy. What we’re going to do is have a segment in every episode that profiles a finished, beautiful car. We’re looking forward to that. Surf City Garage is going to assist us in that area, in terms of sourcing those vehicles and presenting the segment.”
