By Donald Davidson and Rick Shaffer

“The Autocourse Official History of the Indianapolis 500” is a masterpiece. It is co-authored by Rick Shaffer and perhaps the only man who can tell the total tale, Donald Davidson. Davidson could probably dictate the story verbatim from his incredible photographic memory. He also provided the informative photo captions. The book’s 368 pages include hundreds of photographs and covers every Indianapolis 500 from 1911-2006. All 90 races are meticulously researched and lavishly presented. “From Harroun to Hornish, it’s all here.”

As the dust jacket states: ”The Indianapolis 500 is much more than merely the best known automobile race in the world. It is a cherished time-honored institution with a glorious history dating back almost one hundred years.

“For the participants, it has been a saga of dreams, innovation, ingenuity, bravery, triumph and tragedy. Paupers became millionaires, young men from small towns and broken homes became international celebrities, and regrettably, some of them gave their
lives.”

I have attended 24 Indy 500s since 1977. This magnificent book helps me relive the memories and educates me on things I didn’t know. The book is divided into 15 Chapters followed by a 48 page Statistics Section that includes Box Scores of every Indianapolis 500 from 1911-2006.
