The monthly gathering of car enthusiasts looks more like a high-end auto show.

Cars and Coffee gatherings have gone nationwide, with thousands of auto addicts getting together to feed their obsessions for collector cars and caffeine.

In upscale Scottsdale, Arizona, the monthly events take on a decidedly high-end look, with scads of late-model Ferraris, Lamborghinis, special Porsches, Corvettes, Shelbys, even a Bugatti Veyron or two have been known to show up. A new Mercedes-Benz SLR AMG was seen flexing its gullwing doors at a recent gathering, as was a mighty high-performance Porsche loaded up with all kinds of wings and things.

There’s plenty of vintage iron, too, such as an authentic Shelby Cobra 289 or an all-original 1959 Buick convertible in pristine condition. Classic Jaguars were well represented, including a 1930s SS1 sedan and several 1950s XK sports cars. One show-stealer was the meticulously restored 1949 Cadillac two-door sedan.

Scottsdale being home to the famed collector-car auctions every January, including the mighty Barrett-Jackson event, this area is rife with well-heeled car collectors who are not afraid to take their babies out for a drive.

We were treated to our own classic rides by Brighton Motorsports, a Scottsdale collector-car sales and restoration business, which supplied a gaggle of media types with our choices of a 1973 DeTomaso Pantera, 1970 Chevelle SS 396 convertible, 1964 Porsche 356 SC, 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo or a freshly minted Scarab roadster recreation, for which Brighton is the main distributor.

Tough choice, eh? All these cars are part of Brighton’s sales inventory, and we were assigned to give them a bit of air and exercise or our way to the Cars and Coffee event at Gainey Ranch along Scottsdale Road.

The gathering was impressive, indeed, with many millions of dollars worth of desirable vehicles, new and old, and their affable owners providing the conversation. It’s hard to think of anywhere, aside from January’s auto auctions, where such a variety of rare and beautiful cars can be seen all together.
