Trend lines are important in the world of car collecting, as a single auction can reveal a popularity spike within hours. Premiering Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT, new episodes of Barrett-Jackson Special Edition chronicle many of these emerging storylines as they happened throughout the past Barrett-Jackson auction cycle, starting with pre- and post-war classics.
Every Barrett-Jackson event features the voices and analyses of SPEED’s live event coverage – Bob Varsha, Matt Stone, Mike Joy, Steve Magnante, Rick DeBruhl, Justin Bell, Ralph Sheheen and April Rose – exploring such themes as collectable Oldsmobiles, rare survivor vehicles and cars owned by the stars. These were the collector cars that made big impressions from this past year’s auctions in Scottsdale, Ariz.; Palm Beach, Fla.; and Orange County, Calif.
“Barrett-Jackson Special Edition recaptures some of the best stories from the past year, setting up each episode thematically,” said Rick Miner, SPEED Senior VP of Production, Network Operations and Executive Producer. “For example, if you’re a little star struck and want to see what the famous enjoy driving or collecting, the ‘Stars of Stage & Screen’ on Sept. 26 is an episode you’ll want to see.”
One of the more popular trends emerging throughout the past year is the number of original survivor cars that have garnered top dollar. In episode five, affectionately called “Survivors,” many of those top sales from the past year are revisited, including the great patina that makes these cars so special.
Another moment that Barrett-Jackson Special Edition “Stars of Stage & Screen” captures is the sale of Lot 1291 from the Scottsdale auction. Professional golfer “Bubba” Watson made news before his dramatic Masters victory at Augusta National this past April with the purchase the 1969 Dodge Charger known as Lee One, one of the original cars used in the popular television show, Dukes of Hazzard.
The episode, “This IS Your Father’s Oldsmobile,” explores the numerous pristine muscle car-era Oldsmobiles that have recently crossed the block in high-dollar fashion, exemplified by Lot 676 from the Palm Beach auction, a numbers-matching 1971 442 Ram Air convertible.
