The Motorsport Experience: From Indy to the Carolinas is the name of an exciting new college course being offered jointly by IUPUI and Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) in North Carolina. This unique two-week course is offered to students of both universities.

Indianapolis and Winston-Salem are without a doubt the two centers of the racing world so teaming up with WSSU to provide students and an intense, hands-on approach to the fast paced world of motorsports is a great opportunity for our students and theirs, stated Peter Hylton, director of IUPUIs Motorsports program. This is without a doubt one of the most unique college courses offered anywhere, he added.

The course will take place in Indianapolis and Winston-Salem and will recognize the strengths of the two participating universities, Motorsport Management at WSSU and Engineering and Technology Aspects of Motorsport at IUPUI.

Students from IUPUI and WSSU will travel from their respective universities for an unparalleled experiential learning opportunity within the motorsport industry. Students will see the inside operations of both NASCAR and Indy Racing League team shops, as well as tour the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Lowes Motor Speedway and attend events at each.

From the management perspective, topics of study will include historical background of racing; an examination of the different venues available both in the United States and throughout the world; career opportunities in motorsport; the role of marketing
and sponsorship in motorsport; and professional associations and governing bodies will also be discussed.

The technical aspect of the course will involve Safety Technology as applied to the driver, the vehicle and the track, as well as aspects of Performance Technology including aerodynamics, chassis dynamics and data acquisition.

Guest lecturers from different aspects of the industry will discuss their responsibilities and how they were able to successfully pursue a career within motorsport. The course will include lectures, guest speakers, off-campus trips, outside readings, assignments, and cognitive tests. Students from the different institutions will be paired together to focus on specific projects related to the industry.

The course is scheduled for May 12 24, 2008.
