Green Car Journal has named the 2013 Ford Fusion sedan the Green Car of the Year. The ceremony, which took place on the floor of the Los Angeles Auto Show, saw the Fusion selected from a field of five finalists that included 2013 models of the Dodge Dart Aero, Ford C-Max, Toyota Prius C and Mazda CX-5.

The Fusion returns an EPA-estimated 29 mpg when equipped with a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine and six-speed manual transmission. The Fusion hybrid claims best-in-class fuel economy, achieving 47 mpg in city, highway and combined driving. A plug-in hybrid version of the sedan, the Ford Fusion Energi, will go on sale in the first quarter of 2013.

The Green Car of the Year award has been presented since 2006. Last year, the natural gas-powered 2012 Honda Civic GX earned the title.
