GREEN: Ford Fiesta Gets 3-Cylinder Engine
One-liter EcoBoost arrives for 2014 with 128 horsepower, 148 pound-feet of torque and more than 40 miles per gallon, Ford says.

Ford confirmed Monday its three-cylinder 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine will arrive next year in the 2014 Ford Fiesta. The unit is expected to achieve an output of about 123 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque.
The Blue Oval says the turbocharged engine has a higher specific output than any engine in its stable.
Several technologies will help the three-cylinder get more than 40 mpg, Ford said. It starts with the advanced cooling system that accurately manages engine temperature at different points in the system.
A variable-speed oil pump and offset crankshaft reduce noise and vibration while external balancing helps keep the three-cylinder smooth. The primary cam belt runs through an oil bath to reduce noise; it also becomes maintenance free.
The small EcoBoost also uses a scavenging effect to flush residual gases from the cylinder, increasing mass of the following charge and cooling gas to reduce knock. It also helps speed up turbo spooling, which leads to better low-end torque.
“EcoBoost is really a pillar of our fuel-efficiency strategy,” said Bob Fascetti, Ford's global director of engine engineering.
Next year, Ford says it will offer eight vehicles that get more 40 mpg or higher.
More details will be revealed next week at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
