The first vehicles from BMW’s new i division for sustainability and future mobility, the i3 electric hatch and i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, are nearing the end of their development phase and will be launched on the market in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

But BMW shows no signs of slowing the rollout of its new i models and will present yet another i vehicle concept at next week’s 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.

No details about the new concept have been released, though like all i vehicles, it will be purpose-built as electric or hybrid, and constructed primarily from lightweight carbon fiber.

There have been reports claiming BMW will present an ‘i4’ sports car concept in LA. The vehicle is said to be based on the same platform found in the i3 but modified with a wider track and sportier suspension for improved driving feel. Like the i3, the vehicle would be developed as either a pure electric or extended-range electric car.

Another possibility, though one that’s looking less likely, is a new i5 extended-range electric MPV designed to take on the top-selling Toyota Prius.

In addition to the new i concept, BMW will present its previous i8 Spyder concept and X1-based K2 Powder Ride ski concept, all being revealed during the Los Angeles show’s first of two press days Nov. 28.
