The 200-mile-per-hour barrier was again shattered with a vengeance during the final Happy Hour practice for the Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

Fourteen drivers broke the 200 mph mark during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice, led by Greg Biffle’s astonishing lap of 204.708 mph in his No. 16 Roush Fenway Racing Ford.

Jimmie Johnson was the first to break the 200 miles per hour barrier in Happy Hour, running 200.663 mph in his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and then hitting 201.247 mph.

Also fast early was Kurt Busch, who was back behind the wheel of the No. 51 Phoenix Racing Chevrolet. Busch wheeled his unsponsored ride to a speed of 201.027 mph.

Then Biffle caught a draft and it pulled him to a lap of 202.298 mph, the fastest of the four sessions over two days to that point. But just a few moments later Ambrose went 202.367 mph in his No. 9 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford. Biffle then went back out and beat Ambrose’s mark. And then he beat it again, nearly reaching the 205 mph mark.

When the dust settled, Biffle was first, followed by Ambrose, who ultimately hit a lap of 203.551 mph, and Kevin Harvick, 202.954 mph in the No. 29 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. Carl Edwards was fourth, followed by Paul Menard.

The second five was Trevor Bayne, Johnson, Joey Logano, Kurt Busch and Matt Kenseth.

As in the earlier practice, many drivers used Happy Hour as an opportunity to scuff multiple sets of tires for Sunday’s race. Martin Truex Jr. ran a set of sticker tires that blistered badly in just 18 laps. Mark Martin had a similar blistering problem with three of his four tires.

Qualifying is Saturday at 1 p.m. ET and will be televised on SPEED.
