Once an episode of SPEED original series Car Warriors is complete, the winning team takes home its vehicle as a well-deserved prize. After 48 hours of intense work, internal squabbling and extreme fatigue – then overcoming it – an emotional attachment is often created towards the finished car, making it a personal treasure.

Owning that custom ride isn’t the only personal motivator for a special group of talented builders, however. Massachusetts-based Factory Five, a highly successful kit-car manufacturer that specializes in such iconic automobiles as the Cobra, the Cobra Sebring Coupe and the ever-popular 1930s Ford hot rod, asked a group of its current and former team members to challenge each other in a Car Warriors build-off to see who could create the best Factory Five ’33 hot rod.

The competition exceeded all expectations, and for good reason, as it was for a cause greater than their own.

Speed Machine, a group of East Coast builders led by former Factory Five mechanic Mark Dougherty, is donating that winning vehicle to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – a cause very close to the heart of Factory Five President Dave Smith. You can find out more at CFF.org.

“The guys on the East and West Coast Car Warriors teams know my daughter, Jenny, who is now 13 years old and has fought Cystic Fibrosis all her life,” Smith said. “When these guys came together and donated the car, the end product of so much hard work and real value, that was so meaningful to me.”

The winning ride, which was crafted during Episode 7, beat out a team with West Coast origins called the Salty Dawgs.

Speed Machine’s winning car is slated to be auctioned off by CFF in November immediately following this year’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas (Oct. 30 – Nov. 2), after a summer travel schedule for Factory Five’s special-event display. The tour, which features both hot rods from the Car Warriors episode, begins June 9 at the company’s assembly-factory open house in Wareham, Mass. (See schedule below).

"Running a custom-car company is a dream come true, but the most fun and reward comes from working with great people like the Factory Five customer teams and the staff at Car Warriors,” said Dave Smith, Factory Five President. “It is hard to express your feelings when a bunch of car guys come together and do something so generous.

“These cars will raise a ton of money and every penny goes to Cystic Fibrosis research which buys kids like my Jenny more time. How do you say thanks when a guy does that for you? Good guys are all around us and kids with CF will live longer because of that.

“I've been blessed to witness the community of Factory Five car builders, who do some truly amazing and generous things,” Smith said. “This has got to be one of the best."

Dougherty was honored to have the opportunity.

“When they first called to help with this project, and the end result going to help Cystic Fibrosis, I couldn’t say, ‘Yes!’ fast enough,” said Dougherty, a Pennsylvania resident who now travels to clients’ homes to help them build their dream rides. “Car Warriors was really a fun experience and mainly because of the quality of cars to come out of there. You took two teams of guys that didn’t necessarily work together, but we knew each other through the Factory Five message board (http://www.ffcars.com/).

“We all kind of jumped in the same pool together and said, ‘Well, let’s see how it works,’” Dougherty continued. “Everybody knowing that, in the end, whichever car won, it was going to go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. It was just another reason for us to really want to do a good job on the cars.

“Both teams had a vested interest in making these cars great,” said John Davis, Executive Vice President of Production at BASE Productions. “They really poured their hearts and souls into these builds. It really meant something to these two teams.”

Hosted by SoCal Speed Shop lead builder Jimmy Shine, along with lead technicians Brad Fanshaw and Ray McClelland, Car Warriors challenges a pair of independent car customizer shops to a 48-hour build-off to see who can master the challenge.

Traditionally, the two shops are working on identical pieces of American iron, where existing vehicles act as blank canvases on which to create. For this build, the teams had to construct – from the ground up – a ’33 Ford-inspired Factory Five street rod.

“It was kind of funny working on the hot rod,” Dougherty said. “Initially, we had really thought to ourselves that we were building this from nothing to a complete car in 48 hours. We thought we may have been at a disadvantage to previous shows on Car Warriors just because we had to do so much more work.

“One major advantage however was that the body comes off the frame. That was such an incredible advantage because the painter could take his time, start working on the body immediately, while the rest of us built the car. That one point alone really made the quality of the car shine through. We could throw so many extra things into the car. We completely built and painted our engine bay, the radiator and everything matched. We were able to match the distributer cap, the coilovers, and everything had kind of the same theme. It turned into being a tremendous thing for us.”
