When you travel all year, as I do covering the NASCAR Nextel Cup circuit, the thought of spending another full week on the road, especially during the offseason, might not sound appealing. But this week is unlike any other on the calendar: It's Barrett-Jackson week, arguably the most fun a true diehard car geek can possibly have.

The 36th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event, which runs from Jan. 15-21, will attract more than 250,000 visitors, thousands of bidders and more than 1,200 cars. For a car guy, this is nirvana, the automotive equivalent of getting to hang with Hef at the Playboy Mansion for a week. Cars everywhere. Cars to fall in love with. Cars to lust after. Cars that will make your jaw drop. Cars you dreamed about as a kid, cars that made history.

And cars not just in quantity, but quality. If you are my age - think roughly half a century - you grew up in the golden age of the American muscle car, when names like Z/28, Boss 302, Judge and Hemi R/T ruled the streets and drag strips from coast to coast. Barrett-Jackson is where you go to see these monuments of American engineering in the 1960s.

I've been going to
Barrett-Jackson since the late 1980s, when I lived in Phoenix. The scope of the event has exploded exponentially since then, something that founders Russ Jackson and Tom Barrett never could have imagined when they launched their first charity car show, the "Fiesta del los Auto Elegance" in Scottsdale way back in 1967.

No longer simply an auction, Barrett-Jackson is now a true lifestyle event. Along with the sale of more than 1,200 cars this year, B-J events include a charitable gala, a Saks Fifth Avenue fashion show, wine tastings and appearances by Phoenix Cardinals cheerleaders. There are literally hundreds of vendors, selling such disparate products and services as life-size bronze horse statues, liposuction treatments, furniture made from vintage cars, antique gas pumps, clothing, jewelry, and anything and everything in collectible automobilia.

Indeed, this year's edition of Barrett-Jackson features a "Lifestyle Pavilion" with an on-site plastic surgeon, spa VIP treatments, custom-designed jewelry, cigar rolling, wine bar and gourmet kitchen, among other amenities. Also on hand will be real estate agents and charter jet aircraft services.
