The winner of the innovative and highly competitive GrabCAD Supercar Body Design Challenge 2012 will see his car design go into production next year.

Professional automotive and industrial designer Darren McKeage submitted the winning design among 194 entries from around the world received by GrabCAD in just 40 days, an extreme example of a “crowd-sourced” design solution.

McKeage’s mid-engine sports car, named Tosa Street Car, was chosen based on the number of “likes” registered on the contest’s Facebook page.

GrabCAD, an online community of more than 195,000 mechanical engineers that specializes in computer-aided design (CAD), issued the challenge to create a car based on a General Motors Special Projects chassis and powered by a LS9 supercharged V8 capable of 638 horsepower. The contest was held in partnership with 500Group, which engineers, patents and licenses new technologies to industry.

The car is scheduled for production starting in 2013 in conjunction with General Motors Special Projects.

The design by McKeage, the vice president of design and co-founder of Motive Industries, was created under the contest rules using GrabCAD's computer-aided design software.

“This chassis package is an excellent backbone to create an athletic aggressive body,” McKeage says of his entry on the GrabCAD website. “Taking inspiration from classic sports-car design, I've given muscular form to the fenders, shoulders and enhanced areas like around the louvers.

“The name Tosa comes from a very powerful fighting breed of dog, so I found that fitting.”
