If you like the looks of the Volvo C30 but aren’t sold on its performance, step away from the lutefisk; we have some good news for you. For 2013, the automaker best known for building safe but conservative cars is releasing a Polestar-tuned version of its compact hatchback.

The C30 Polestar, loosely based on the concept of the same name, gets a noticeable infusion of horsepower, thanks to software changes that increase airflow and advance timing. The net result is that the 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine now makes 250 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, a gain of 23 horsepower and 37 pound-feet.

Fuel economy remains unchanged, with the six-speed manual returning an estimated 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway (or 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway if the optional five speed Geartronic automatic is chosen).

Underneath, buyers get the Sport Chassis, which includes mono-tube dampers, stiffer springs, harder bushings and a slightly quicker steering ratio for faster turn-in.

Outside, C30 Polestar models get 17-inch alloy wheels with a matte black finish, Polestar badging and Rebel Blue paint (which, oddly, is the only color option available to buyers). There’s a color-coordinated body kit and an R-Design grille logo, too.

Inside, seats get premium leather seating surfaces in Off-Black or Off-Black and Calcite, and a number plate designates the car as a limited edition. Premier Plus trim is standard, so buyers get a sunroof, power driver and passenger seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, LED daytime running lights, HID headlamps and push button start.

Expect inventory to hit showrooms in November, so we wouldn’t put off a conversation with your Volvo dealer too much longer if you want one of your own. Only 250 examples will be built, each with a starting price of $32,445, including a destination charge of $895.
