The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu won't be offered with a V6, but not too many drivers are likely to miss it.

Chevrolet is going with an all-four-cylinder lineup with the next Malibu, and in top-of-the-line form, the 2-liter turbocharged engine gets 259 horsepower, along with 260 peak pound-feet of torque achieved at just 1,700 rpm. That pegs the Malibu's 0-60 mph time at just 6.3 seconds, which is quicker than the current V6 model.

In 2012 Malibu models, the 3.6-liter V6 makes 252 horsepower and peak torque of 251 pound-feet at much higher rpm.

While Toyota, Nissan and a few others remain committed to the V6 in their midsize sedans, the number of choices with this once-popular combination is dwindling. The base-model 2013 Malibu will feature an efficient 197-horsepower, direct-injected 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.

Base versions of the 2013 Malibu, introduced at last year's New York Auto Show, are due to go on sale this summer and will be followed by models with the turbo engine this fall. GM hasn't yet said whether the turbo engine will be an option at the top of the line, or as part of its own separate model.

The upcoming Malibu is Chevrolet’s first global midsize sedan, which the automaker plans to sell in nearly 100 countries on six continents. It is current on sale in South Korea and China, with sales to begin this year throughout Europe, Scandinavia, the Middle East, Africa and other Asia-Pacific markets.
