Toyota will fix 378,000 Prius hybrid cars in the United States with a coolant pump that can cause the cars to overheat.

The repair campaign covers 2004-2007 Prius models and effects about 650,000 cars worldwide, the automaker said. Toyota’s voluntary action is considered a repair campaign rather than a safety recall.

The faulty electric pumps circulate coolant for the hybrid system. The problem is that they allow air bubbles to enter the otherwise sealed system, which can result in the components getting too hot. If they overheat, the hybrid runs on a “fail-safe” mode with reduced power.

Toyota has had a series of damaging recalls this year, including the highly publicized “unintended acceleration” actions, which tarnished the company’s reputation for quality and reliability. About 15.4 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles have been recalled in the past year.

Owners of the effected Prius cars will be notified in early December, the automaker said.
