Subaru has major plans for the next generation of its cult classic WRX and more extreme WRX STI, and this time the cars won’t be derived from an economy-car platform, according to the latest reports.
Earlier this year, we reported that Subaru would be dropping the Impreza title from WRX and WRX STI to further differentiate them from the regular family-oriented vehicle.
Now Automotive News reports that the new performance models due in 2013 will also sport unique platforms.
According to information revealed by senior vice president of sales for Subaru of America Bill Cyphers, the new WRX and WRX STI would be moving more upscale to better reflect their price hike over the regular Impreza, with unique engines, interiors and features to differentiate them.
Cyphers also said that the WRX STI would develop at least 300 horsepower. A previous source said the cars would use a radically modified and significantly shortened version of the Impreza’s platform.
