Mini knows how to make splash. On April Fool's Day, it revealed the tongue-in-cheek Mini Yachtsman amphibious vehicle. Mini was riding on water again this past weekend during the Head of Charles Regatta in Boston.

The six-horsepower Mini Convertible boat was built for Mini's annual Motor-Tober festivities, when the brand takes a month to celebrate its quirky, fun-loving image. It was dreamed up as Mini USA Eastern Region's idea of "Not Normal," the theme for this year's Motor-Tober.

"We challenged our regional staff and the dealers in their respective areas to identify 'Not Normal' ways to celebrate this Motor-Tober by engaging the Mini community and demonstrate why it's an exciting brand family to be part of," said Tom Salkowsky, marketing manager for Mini USA.

The Mini convertible boat acted as a support vessel for the Charles River race from the Boston University Boathouse to Christian Herter Park. Operated by a member of the Regatta River control committee, it helped monitor the safety of the rowers.

After its introductory cruise in Boston, the public might see the convertible boat on the Hudson or heading down the Potomac for other events, Mini said.

ACI Composites Inc. of Lancaster, Pa., built the one-of-a-kind Mini Convertible boat, creating a fiberglass replica of the car and mounting it on a boat hull. The boat is accessorized with authentic Mini headlights, taillights, grille, steering wheel, badges, wheels, tires and other parts to give it an authentic-though-strange appearance.
