The last of 69 COPO Camaros built for 2012, and one of only two convertibles, was unveiled today at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, with Chevrolet donating the car to sell at the Barrett-Jackson collector-car auction in January to benefit the American Heart Association.

The COPO race car, number 69 of the sequenced production, is a unique creation: it’s the only one painted Inferno Orange Metallic and the only convertible released to the public. The other one, number 68, is being kept by Chevrolet for its own collection.

The special-edition Camaro is one of 20 powered by a 327 V8 and 4-liter supercharger, and the only example built with a Turbo 400 three-speed automatic transmission. The drag racer boasts an NHRA-certified output of 550 horsepower.

"Chevrolet is proud to once again partner with the American Heart Association at Barrett-Jackson for the sale of this COPO Camaro convertible,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “It will make a great race car or collector vehicle for a lucky bidder, who will be buying a piece of history.”

The 2012 production run of COPO Camaros won’t be the last, though. Chevrolet announced that due to strong demand, another 69 versions will be built for the 2013 model year.

The COPO Camaros are designed for drag-strip competition, each fitted with an NHRA-approved roll cage and other safety equipment. The cars are built on a racing chassis with performance suspension components, including a unique solid rear-axle system instead of the regular production Camaro’s independent rear axle.

Chevy performance fans who want to build their own COPO Camaros can get all the parts and supplies needed to transform a stock Camaro from the new 2013 Chevrolet Performance catalog, which now has a special COPO section. For information or ordering online, see chevroletperformance.com.

Special auction sales for charitable causes have become a hallmark of Barrett-Jackson events, with the auction company set to cross the $50 million mark in overall charity sales during the upcoming Scottsdale auction.
