Mitsubishi CEO Osamu Masuko has confirmed that the next Lancer Evolution will be powered by a diesel-electric hybrid system, according to a report in the British publication Autocar.

The 11th generation of the all-wheel-drive, rally-inspired sedan’s diesel-electric drivetrain would have the performance to uphold the car’s sporty reputation while responding to the worldwide drive towards more fuel efficient cars and tightening emissions regulations, the publication said.

“We will start on the project next year, and it will be ready within three,” Masuko told Autocar. “I have set a goal of developing a sporting car featuring electric power,”

The current Mitsubishi Evo X is due to end production in 2013, with the hybrid-powered XI due sometime after that.

Autocar said the yet-to-be-developed Evolution could speed from zero to 60 mph in less than five seconds while drastically cutting tailpipe emissions.

The Mitsubishi Evo is not highly popular in the U.S., with fans of the four-wheel-drive rally-ready car constituting a niche within a niche market. Making the switch from gasoline to diesel could make it even less popular among those who resist losing the current Evo’s 286-horsepower turbocharged 2-liter aluminum engine.
