"Soft" brake pedal blamed on air entering system but stopping is not affected, Honda says.

Honda is preparing a recalled of about 412,000 Odyssey minivans and Element crossovers to fix a brake-system problem that can lead to a low and spongy pedal feel.

The recall affects 2007-2008 models and includes 344,000 Odysseys and 68,000 Elements, Honda said, for modification of Vehicle Stability Assist modulators that can allow air to seep into the brake hydraulic system over time.

“Honda has received customer complaints of brake pedals that feel ‘soft’ or that gradually exhibit a pedal height that gets lower (closer to the floor) before the vehicle stops,” Honda said in a media release.

The condition, which Honda said does not cause a loss of braking, develops gradually over months or years before becoming noticeable.

Owners are expected to be notified in late April, they can schedule an appointment to bring their vehicles to Honda dealers to be checked and repaired.

Not every recalled Odyssey or Element is affected by this problem, Honda said, because only “some VSA modulators were assembled in a manner that could allow air intrusion.” The automaker is recalling all of them to ensure that the problem cars are identified and fixed.
