AUTOS: Hollywood’s Hottest Car Chases - The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Despite being chock full of special effects and a computerized world, the producers still left room for some good, old-fashioned automotive mayhem.

The Matrix trilogy from earlier this decade has become a science fiction favorite for many. Starring Keanu Reeves (Neo) and Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus), The Matrix Reloaded was released in 2003 as the series’ second installment. Despite being chock full of special effects and a computerized world, there was still room for some good, old-fashioned automotive mayhem.

In a largely overlooked car chase scene, yet one that’s as intense as any ever produced, Morpheus and Trinity (played by Carrie-Anne Moss) try to escape Merovingian's (Lambert Wilson) henchmen with the Keymaker. The henchmen were behind the wheel of a new Cadillac Escalade (see below), as Trinity drove the brand’s new CTS. The new Cadillac CTS had just hit showrooms with its angular styling targeted at a younger audience, and the movie’s chase scene demonstrated Cadillac’s focus on agility and drivability.

By all accounts, the scene was created in a controlled environment, and filming took place at the decommissioned Naval Air Station Alameda in California. The producers constructed a 1.5-mile freeway upon its old runways, while smaller portions of the chase were filmed in and around Oakland, Calif. Wide-open spaces allowed for efficient resets, making multiple takes easier and less costly.

What to look for… The Cadillac Escalade is actually a re-bodied Chevrolet Avalanche. Also, notice how little actual CGI was used in the filming of this scene.
