AUTOS: Hollywoods Hottest Car Chases; The Dark Knight 2008
Only Batman would have a car that can morph into a motorcycle.

The Dark Knight, Director Christopher Nolan’s most recent version of Batman, is one of the most popular movies if all time. Grossing more than $1 billion in revenues since its release in 2008, this movie has reached a stratosphere few others have topped. All of this despite the sad and untimely death of Heath Ledger, (who played the Joker), after one of his best-ever performances, just weeks after wrapping his part in the production.

Shot mainly in downtown Chicago, Batman (played by Christian Bale) tries to break up the Joker’s attempt to kidnap Harvey Dent (played by Aaron Eckhart), who’s being transported to prison after providing cover for Bruce Wayne. The motorcade is sent into a trap upon arriving at a burning fire truck in the middle of the road.

Batman’s toys are in full regale for this one. In trying to block Joker’s hand held rocket attack on Dent’s armored transport vehicle, the tank-like Batmobile sustains terminal damage. Undeterred, Batman broke out his ‘motorcycle’ and proceeded to track down the Joker and his semi truck, converging into one of the movie’s most memorable moments. Good timing here as they just announced The Dark Knight Rises as the next installment for 2012. ‘Why so serious?’

What to look for… If you want a taste of Ledger’s brilliance in portraying his Batman character, just listen to the dialogue during the chase. The dark humor is truly representative of the Joker’s persona. Also, when the Batmobile crashes through the concrete wall, track ‘the missing wheel’ as the scene plays out.

Everyone has their favorite car chase scene… and many have multiple ones. On Thanksgiving Night (Nov. 25), SPEED enters the conversation with a two-hour special called, Hollywood’s Hottest Car Chases, premiering at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

New York City’s Pangolin Pictures looks at the last 40 years of cinematic car chases, re-living many great scenes through the eyes of those who created, shot and played out what has become one of Hollywood’s greatest creative contributions. Broken out in themes, this feature presentation is produced to be the most comprehensive look at how this genre has evolved from Steve McQueen’s Bullitt to Matt Damon’s Bourne Identity.

Through Thanksgiving, SPEED will roll out some of our favorites from around the studio here in Charlotte. This not a countdown per se, and we want to hear from you, as we’ll introduce a new car chase scene every Monday through Thursday. Let the Chase Begin…
