Warner Bros. has denied reports that General Lee, the famous 1969 Dodge Charger from The Dukes of Hazzard, would be losing the Confederate flag from its roof.

“We were not and are not planning to change design of the General Lee on merchandise,” Warner Brothers Consumer Products said in a statement. “All reports to the contrary have been inaccurate to this point.”

The entertainment-industry website Screencrush.com reported last week that Warner Bros., which owns all rights to General Lee depictions in film, toys and scale models, was banning the flag, a controversial emblem of the Confederacy from the Civil War, from all future versions of the car.

The story apparently originated from a community forum at Hobbytalk.com, a website that focuses on die-cast, radio-control and slot cars, according to a New York Times story. A forum commentator said that a representative of Tomy, owner of the Ertl brand of die-cast models, told him that Warner Bros. made the decision to remove the flag from future General Lee models because some people find it offensive.

Further reports of the reputed decision sparked a firestorm of protest from Dukes fans who objected to the supposed tampering with the show’s most-enduring symbol. There were a number of online petitions against the flag removal, and the rumor went as far as the Today show running an online poll, which came in overwhelmingly against stripping the flag from the car.
