The midsize Ford Fusion sedan has won Motor Trend magazine’s 2010 Car of the Year award, besting 23 contenders for the coveted prize.

Fusion was selected for the prize, presented annually to a new or substantially redesigned car, for a 2010 makeover that improved fuel mileage, styling and interior. The sedan was introduced for the 2006 model year and has reached 10th place in overall U.S. vehicle sales.

The redesigned Fusion, which debuted in March, has become the top-selling car from a domestic brand with a 15 percent increase in sales during 2009, according to Ford.

"Ford has proven its resilience in these tough times by delivering to market a car with broad appeal to a broad range of consumers," said Angus MacKenzie, Motor Trend editor-in-chief.

"The Fusion range has matured into a competitive roster of midsize sedans, able to compete with sales juggernauts such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord,” MacKenzie said. “It is no surprise the Fusion now ranks in the top 10 best-selling cars in America.”

The award is based on the results of six criteria: design achievement, engineering excellence, intended function, efficiency, safety and value. To win the prize, Fusion had to overcome such competition as high-end cars from BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Ford touts the Fusion’s improved fuel economy, calling it the most fuel-efficient midsize sedan in the U.S. market. The Fusion S powered by a four-cylinder engine and automatic transmission gets a combined 27 miles per gallon, which is two mpg better than comparable models of Honda Accord or Toyota Camry.

The newly introduced Fusion Hybrid gets 41 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway, according to the EPA.

"The Fusion brought a vast assortment of choice that has the potential to appeal to every type of driver, from the eco-conscious to the sport-minded," MacKenzie said. "The Fusion's combination of comfort, fuel efficiency, assortment and technology made it a clear winner among our panel of judges."
