AUTOS: Ford February Sales Roared Past GM’s
North American results show 13 percent rise over last year; Toyota sales dip.

Ford snuck past General Motors in February, selling the most vehicles in North America for the first time in 12 years as it gained 43 percent over February 2009.

The February results, announced today industry-wide, marked Ford’s fifth straight month of gains with strong sales of the Fusion midsize sedan pulling the wagon.

GM, the annual North American sales leader since 1931, sold 141,535 vehicles during February, 12 percent more vehicles than last February. Ford sold just 471 more, at 142,006.

Toyota, facing a major crisis with unintended acceleration issues, did not do as badly as analysts had feared; sales dropped just nine percent compared with last year. The slump was led by a 20 percent plunge in Camry sales.

Across the board, North American sales rose 13 percent compared with February 2009, which was the worst sales month in three years of decline.

February 2010 sales dipped slightly compared with January’s, partly blamed on harsh winter weather and Toyota’s troubles. The annualized sales rate for February was 10.36 million vehicles, down from 10.54 million in January.

Subaru scored yet another strong month with a 38 percent advance, and Volkswagen was up 33 percent. Other February gainers among major automakers were Nissan, up 29 percent; BMW, up 14 percent; Honda, up 13 percent; Jaguar/LandRover, up 11 percent; Hyundai/Kia, up 10 percent; Mazda, up four percent; and Daimler Benz, up one percent.

Chrysler sales were essentially flat, with no loss or gain compared with February 2009.

The biggest losers were Suzuki, dropping 61 percent, and Mitsubishi, down 10 percent.
