The popularity of SPEED’s interactive Hagerty Fantasy Bid Game increased twofold during January’s Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. Nearly 1.6 million fantasy bids were cast during the-most recent game, more than doubling the previous high of 699,200 achieved in 2011 gameplay.

Driving the 227 percent overall increase was the giveaway of a one-of-a-kind, 750-horsepower Ford Racing Champions Shelby GT500 Special Edition Mustang. The car was created with the collaboration of 2011 Daytona 500 champion Trevor Bayne and 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series titlist Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., who each signed a plaque signifying his involvement.

The Mustang will be presented to Tucson, Ariz., resident Chris Cherryholmes during SPEED’s upcoming NASCAR Speedweeks coverage from Daytona International Speedway. Both Stenhouse and Bayne are set to present the car on SPEED during a Feb. 24 edition of NASCAR Live. An extended feature on the presentation can also be seen during SPEED’s broadcast of the April 5-7 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction from Palm Beach, Fla.

“We’ve been after a car to give away to complement our Hagerty Fantasy Bid game for a long time and our friends at Ford Racing helped us realize that vision in Scottsdale,” said Kevin Annison, SPEED Vice President of Digital & Interactive Media. “The amazing car helped activate the game at a new level. It resonated with our audience and they jumped in beyond our expectations. It was a lot of fun to watch unfold.”

To say Cherryholmes’ new Mustang GT500 is special would be an understatement. For starters, the Shelby name enhances the car’s pedigree, with legendary performance beginning with the Shelby Mustangs of the late 1960s. This car has 750 horsepower at the rear wheels, developed by a Ford Racing supercharger, with a six-speed manual transmission and 3.5-inch aluminum driveshaft delivering all that power to the rear wheels. A C&R Racing cooling system controls the engine’s heat, while exterior aero and appearance upgrades finish its overall look and feel.

Ford Racing also bolted on its high-performance handling package, highlighted by Dynamic Suspensions adjustable shocks rear and front, lowering springs that dropped the ride height about 1.25 inches, and stabilizer bars front and rear. Upgraded Wilwood brakes were also included.

“Ford was not only willing but eager to participate in SPEED’s Hagerty Fantasy Bid game,” said Jim Owens, Ford’s Marketing Manager for Mustang/Shelby/Enthusiast Events. “This Shelby GT500 is an ultimate fantasy car for a car enthusiast, and with our long history with the Shelby name and Carroll Shelby himself, we were in a unique position to provide it. It’s a great Ford, too, because we’re always working to strengthen our connections with car enthusiasts, and this program connected a lot with them.”

The growth of the Hagerty Fantasy Bid game has been impressive. In 2005, when the game inaugurated at the Scottsdale auction, 66,800 bids were placed. Year-over-year benchmark increases have been steady with significant bumps beginning in 2009. The number trends are as follows:

2006: 109,400.
2007: 182,700.
2008: 362,000.
2009: 589,300.
2010: 658,000.
2011: 699,200.
2012: 1,591,910.

The Hagerty Fantasy Bid Game can be played during SPEED’s live presentation at each Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auctions which encompasses the Scottsdale show, and upcoming events at Palm Beach, Fla., on April 5-7; Orange County, Calif., on June 22-24; and Las Vegas on Sept. 20-22. The game challenges contestants periodically throughout SPEED’s live coverage to guess the final gaveled price of pre-selected vehicles without going over.

Players are awarded points at the completion of each Fantasy Bid car and daily session. The player amassing the most points throughout Hagerty Fantasy Bidding gameplay is declared the grand-prize winner, with runner up and third-place prizing awarded as well. Daily prizes and per-car prizes are also awarded. Players wanting to create an entry can log onto http://www.speedfantasybid.com/ to register.

Along with the Hagerty Fantasy Bid Mustang GT500 Giveaway, SPEED rolled out the new SPEED Social Garage during the Scottsdale event, where the audience interacts with on-air personalities, celebrities and industry experts through Facebook and Twitter conversations, opening a higher level of accessibility to a younger audience.

Ratings within key demographics also saw across-the-board increases over 2011. Men 18-34 grew by 57 percent (32,000 to 54,000 viewers), while men 25-54 (149,000 to 193,000) improved by 31 percent. Those numbers are highlighted by the triple-digit increases of Men 18-34 and Men 18-49 during the Jan. 20 broadcast by 314 percent and 329 percent, respectively.

Additionally, the game help propel SPEED.com to achieve the largest traffic month on record driving 1.8 million unique visitors to the site, with 21 million page views for the month of January.
