A jury of automotive journalists has picked the redesigned Hyundai Elantra and the all-new Range Rover Evoque as winners of the 2012 North American Car and Truck of the Year awards, announced today at the opening of the Detroit Auto Show media days.

The winners were picked from a list of 24 "all new" or "substantially changed" 2012 vehicles, and beat out finalists Ford Focus and Volkswagen Passat for Car of the Year and BMW X3 and Honda CR-V for Truck of the Year.

The highly prized awards are given annually by a panel of 50 automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada who work in print, online, TV and radio. Last year, the Chevrolet Volt was chosen as Car of the Year and the Ford Explorer won the truck prize.

This is the second time that Hyundai has captured the Car of the Year prize, with a win in 2009 for the Genesis, and the first time that Range Rover has won. The Evoque, with its expressive styling and off-road capabilities, has won a bevy of awards from automotive journalists.
