Chrysler’s Ram truck division has announced an industry first: a small-displacement diesel engine will be offered for the 1500 half-ton pickup later this year.

The 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will be equipped with a Fiat-sourced 3-liter V6 turbocharged diesel, Chrysler said. To further boost fuel economy, the engine will come with an eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission.

“Truck owners have been emphatically asking for it, and Ram will be the only manufacturer to offer a diesel powertrain in the half-ton segment with the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel,” said Fred Diaz, president of the Ram Truck brand and CEO of Chrysler Mexico.

Though Ram isn’t releasing horsepower or torque figures yet, the same engine under the hood of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been pegged at 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, so comparable numbers are expected for the Ram 1500.

There’s no word yet on fuel economy numbers either, but Chrysler is quick to point out that its EcoDiesel V6 produces 60-percent lower emissions than diesel engines of 25 years ago. Diaz said the truck will deliver “best-in-class torque, fuel economy and range.”

Look for details on power, fuel economy and pricing to be released closer to the new model’s late-summer launch.
