The 2014 Chevy Corvette C7 will be powered by a new 6.2-liter V8 with an aluminum block that produces 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, Chevrolet announced today in Pontiac, Mich.

The company is bringing back the LT1 code for the engine, with 20 horsepower and 26 pound-feet more than the current car, making it the most-powerful standard model ever. In the new Corvette, it will be good for a 0-to-60 mph sprint in less than four seconds, Chevy says.

New technology used by the V8 includes direct fuel injection, continuously variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation, which leads to fuel economy of up to 26 mpg on the highway, the automaker said.

Despite the aluminum block, the new LT1 is heavier than the outgoing model due to all the added technology.

Premium fuel is recommended but not required, despite the new LT1's high 11.5:1 compression ratio. Both wet-sump and dry-sump oiling systems will be offered.

The original LT1 made its first appearance in the 1970 Corvette, and the second generation debuted in the 1992 model. The company says the new Gen 5 small-block engine will be built at the Tonawanda engine plant in Buffalo, N.Y.
