Cadillac chose the elegant outdoors backdrop of Pebble Beach, Calif., to unveil the Ciel concept convertible today prior to Sunday’s world-famous Concours d’Elegance.

Named for the French word for sky, pronounced “C-L,” the big four-seat touring car was inspired by the beauty of the California coastline, according to Cadillac designers, while advancing the brand’s “Art & Science philosophy.”

“Large, expressive luxury is innate to Cadillac and the Ciel recalls that heritage, while suggesting where the brand can go in the future,” said Clay Dean, global design director for Cadillac. “Authentic luxury is driven by experiences, not just products, and Ciel is about the experience of the journey.”

Ciel will be shown on the Concept Car Lawn at the Pebble Beach concours throughout the weekend, a demonstration of the GM luxury marque’s styling direction for a flagship luxury car, according to GM.

“The Ciel is about the romance of the drive,” Dean added. “It emulates the great touring cars seen on the greens at Pebble Beach, but with a modern flair that projects Cadillac’s vision for the future.”

The concept was created at the North Hollywood Design Center with Niki Smart as the lead exterior designer and Gael Buzyn leading interior development.

Ciel represents a bold luxury statement by Cadillac, 200 inches long with a 125-inch wheelbase, rear-hinged back doors, nickel-plated wheels and trim, LED headlights and exotic Italian Olive wood on the doors, instrument panel, console and the front seatbacks. The wood came from a single fallen and recycled tree, kiln dried and painstakingly applied so that the grain matches continuously.

“There is authentic craftsmanship in the way the exterior and interior elements meld, much like a vintage wooden boat,” Buzyn said, “It is romantic, not only in its form, but the materials – nothing smells as good as real wood and leather.”

As well as evoking romantic visions of moonlit drives, Ciel also brings forward the driving realities of today; it is powered by a twin-turbocharged version of the 3.6-liter Direct Injection V-6 engine, paired with a hybrid system using lithium-ion battery technology.
