Chevrolet ranks as the top sports-car brand in the United States, with one out of every three performance models sold in the U.S. during 2011 either a Corvette or a Camaro, the General Motors division declared today.

There were 88,429 Camaros sold during 2011, a 37 percent share of the sports car market, again beating Ford Mustang’s total of 70,438 sold, a 29 percent share. That’s the second year in a row that the new Camaro has dominated Mustang; in 2010, Camaro beat Mustang for the first time ever.

Among luxury sports cars, Corvette was the clear winner with 13,164 sold in 2011, a 28 percent market share, which was more than double its closest competitor, Porsche 911, at 6,016 sold.

Camaro and Mustang are slugging it out in the horsepower wars, with the new Camaro ZL1 boasting 580 horsepower vs. the top-dog Mustang, the 2013 Shelby GT500, which cranks out 650 horsepower. Ford claims that’s the highest horsepower of any production V8, with the new GT500 due in showrooms this summer.

Analysts credit Camaro’s widening lead against Mustang with the freshness of the model after a hiatus of seven years while Mustang’s latest is an updated version of model that dates back to 2005.

Corvette’s lead is not so surprising considering the enduring popularity of the muscular sports car and its relatively modest price compared with other top sports models. Corvette celebrates its 60th anniversary with the 2013 versions, which will feature a new edition of the Corvette 427.

The performance edge continues with the latest Corvette ZR1 that delivers a supercharged 638 horsepower, making it the most powerful car that Chevy has ever produced.

General Motors North America President Mark Reuss called the Corvette ZR1 and Camaro ZL1 “the world’s best performance cars for the money.”

“With the addition of the Camaro ZL1, there are only a handful of brands in the world with two cars that can match the performance, technology and excitement of Corvette and Camaro,” Reuss said.
