In-car entertainment has evolved into an arms race among the manufacturers; one company adds a touch-screen display, another one upgrades to haptic feedback.

Cadillac has launched the latest volley with a CUE system for the 2013 SRX that comes with a gaming-style controller to manage each of the eight-inch screens.

The big news is the dual-play option. That means one backseat passenger can watch cartoons or stored Blu-Ray movies, while the other can play video games. The oval CUE controller is meant to be easily used by veteran gamers, but it still comes with a quick-reference chart so anyone can figure it out.

“Having multiple media-connectivity options really gives owners flexibility with entertainment, especially families,” said Charlene Goike, rear-seat entertainment lead engineer. “One can easily pop in their camera's SD cards on the way home from their kid's sports games to let the young ones instantly relive the action.”

The only problem we see is the exclusion of an HDMI input. As it stands, the system can only accept the red-yellow-white RCA cables, a mini SD card or a USB input. Those connections make true high-definition gaming and movie watching impossible. Though, on the plus side, the screen is only eight inches, which will keep things relatively sharp.

The package is offered on the Luxury, Performance and Premium trim level SRX's for $1,595. Complete pricing on the Cadillac SRX will be available closer to launch.
