The fastest version of the Bugatti Veyron, the Super Sport, already holds the land speed record for a production car with its top speed of 268 mph, but Bugatti looks ready to smash its own record with a new model built to commemorate the end of Veyron’s production.

The final version of the Veyron – which has already been nicknamed "Super Veyron" – will have a top speed of 288 mph, beating the current record by 20 mph, according to the latest information from CAR. Equally stunning will be the car’s acceleration figures, which is said to include a 0-60 mph time of just 1.8 seconds.

That’s faster than a Formula One race car, and it should also be faster than the upcoming Ferrari Enzo replacement and the McLaren P1.

The Veyron has been around since 2005 and a successor is planned, which means production of the current model must come to an end. The last Veyron model will reportedly deliver 1,600 horsepower in a package that’s 550 pounds lighter than the current lightest Veyron, the Super Sport, which tips the scales at almost 4,200 pounds. That means the new model could achieve the holy one horsepower per kilo (2.2 pounds).

To achieve around 1,600 horsepower, an insane figure for a production car, Bugatti engineers will be reworking the Veyron’s quad-turbocharged 8-liter W16 engine. There’s talk that displacement could even be bumped up to 9.6 liters, and some reports have said that hybrid technology could feature.

When will we see this new Super Veyron? Apparently at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show next September.
