BMW has given the production nod to the luxurious coupe-like four-door concept unveiled in April at the Beijing auto show, designed to compete with such stylish rides as the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Porsche Panamera.

The production version of the Concept Gran Coupe is expected in showrooms during 2012 and priced somewhere between $90,000 and $100,000. The car will get the technology of the current 6-series coupe and will follow the launch of the new version of that two-door car.

BMW hints that the Gran Coupe could get a hybrid variation similar to that in place for the other midsize and large models.

High-end Italian sports-car builder Lamborghini also said today that it is exploring the feasibility of marketing a performance four-door sedan based on its concept version.
