BMW stretches out its X3 compact SUV for 2011, with an undated appearance and a new pair of engines.

BMW released photos of its second-generation X3, which will be officially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show this fall, and will be available in U.S. showrooms later this year. The SUV is produced at BMW’s factory in Spartanburg, S.C.

The interior benefits from the 3.4-inch increase in length, gaining luggage space and legroom, while the cabin styling has been refined with a new dashboard and seats.

Two versions of the 3-liter inline-six-cylinder engine will be on board, both equipped with eight-speed automatic transmissions. The base engine for the xDrive281 produces 240 horsepower while the turbocharged engine in the xDrive35i is boosted to 300 horsepower.

The new exterior styling is more squared off than the previous generation with evolutionary changes in details and trim. All models come standard with BMW’s electronic four-wheel drive, although a rear-drive U.S. model is reportedly being considered.
