Barry Meguiar has been released from a Monterey hospital after 17 days of treatment for a rare and potentially deadly form of viral pneumonia.

Mequiar, the enthusiastic host of “Car Crazy” on SPEED, was admitted to Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula the night before major events started for Pebble Beach Week in the Monterey area. He had “stopped by” the emergency room because of some unusual pain that he was experiencing and was found to have the dangerous virus “raging through his body,” according to a family statement.

He was immediately admitted and put into an eight-day drug-induced coma for treatment.

“It’s a miracle I’m alive,” Meguiar said.

The 67-year-old TV host and president of Meguiar car-care products left the hospital Monday and has apparently recovered fully from the pneumonia. He is expected to host “Car Crazy SEMA TV” on SPEED once again this year in October, his family said.

Always an ambassador for the collector-car hobby, Meguiar said that as well as thanking God for saving his life, he also credits the heavy population of car guys working at the hospital.

"Car guys are literally working in every department, and all the things that make car guys special permeate this place, from the high performance of their equipment to the determination to go the extra mile," he said.
