More than 1,000 collector cars, nearly 40 hours of broadcast time and two new members of the on-air team launch SPEED’s enhanced coverage of the 41st annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale, Arizona, auction from Jan. 17 to 22. This is the crown jewel within a grand slam of live collector-car auctions for 2012, which includes Palm Beach, Fla., from April 5-7; Orange County, Calif., from June 22-24; and Las Vegas from Sept. 20-22.

Each Barrett-Jackson presentation is highly interactive with numerous entry points throughout SPEED’s many delivery platforms. This year’s Scottsdale event is highlighted by the Hagerty Fantasy Bid Game – offering the largest grand prize giveaway in its history, which will be announced in early January.

“SPEED is kicking off more than 100 hours of live collector-car auction coverage by putting unprecedented production resources and support throughout all of our platforms,” said Rick Miner, SPEED Senior VP of Production and Network Operations. “Our audience has the opportunity to watch the auction on the linear network, play the Hagerty Fantasy Bid game and view additional alternate streaming cameras at SPEED.com, while directly conversing with on-air talent inside SPEED’s Social Garage on Facebook and Twitter at hash tag #BJA2012.

“We want to give the great docket of cars Barrett-Jackson is putting together the presentation they deserve, so we are expanding our on-air team, camera coverage, audio and graphics package to offer our audience the greatest coverage of Scottsdale, ever,” Miner added. “It should set the benchmark for our Barrett-Jackson presentations moving forward.”

Long-time Formula One and Barrett-Jackson voice Bob Varsha is once again hosting this year’s proceedings, with popular automotive author and writer Matt Stone providing color commentary. On the auction block, car enthusiast Mike Joy, the Voice of NASCAR on FOX & SPEED, and muscle-car expert Steve Magnante, a freelance writer and former technical editor of Hot Rod magazine, take an up-close look at the vehicles as they cross. Arizona’s Rick DeBruhl and sports-car driver Justin Bell cover the viewing tents, staging areas and preview the upcoming Hagerty Fantasy Bid Cars throughout the week.

SPEED has also added two new members to the on-air broadcast team. Long-time AMA motorcycle racing voice and car nut Ralph Sheheen and Maxim’s April Rose, a muscle-car aficionado, are also putting their stamp on the car culture through vehicle features, personality profiles and participation in the Social Garage.

This year’s Scottsdale auction already has a wide selection of top-line collector vehicles consigned. Among those offered is one of the most coveted collector cars in the marketplace today and headlines the company’s newest Salon Offering Collection, a 1954 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing coupe. Being sold out of long-time car enthusiast Don Williams’ prestigious Blackhawk Collection, this original piece has been driven just a little more than 4,100 miles, and it still holds its factory-issued manual, tool kit, service book and registration card. This is one of only 146 built that year.

“There are few European cars of the 1950s that rank as true blue-chip collectables, but the Mercedes-Benz 300SL has remained high on everyone's list,” Joy said. “Born of a successful competition car, its pedigree is top rank. The beautiful styling and the unique gullwing doors give it a rare exclusivity, and the performance is right up there with any car of its era.

“All the ingredients are there – premium brand, race-proven design, stellar performance, unique features, great styling, limited production and great to drive,” he added. “These will continue to be sought-after cars for generations to come.”

Another car that may help define this upcoming auction is even rarer. One of 51 examples ever built, a 1948 Tucker Torpedo Sedan (Chassis No. 1043) is set to cross the Barrett-Jackson auction block in primetime. This bright-blue version, owned by renowned collector Ron Pratte of Chandler, Arizona, could be one of the most pristine examples in existence today. Its meticulous presentation has the automotive community buzzing.

“The last restored Tucker sold was (Chassis No. 1045) in August 2010 at the RM Monterey, Calif. sale and it brought with fees, $1,127,500,” said Jay A. Follis, president of the Tucker Automobile Club of America, Inc. (www.TuckerClub.org). “Tucker (No. 1043) has been correctly and stunningly restored. I anticipate a new world record – well over $1 million – will be reached when No. 1043 crosses the auction block.”

The car’s builder, Preston Tucker, who operated his shop in and around the Chicago area, was the subject of Francis Ford Coppola’s popular 1988 movie Tucker: The Man and His Dream, shut down his factory after one year amid scandal and accusations of stock fraud.

In addition to theinteractivity and alternate streaming cameras, SPEED.com is providing daily news stories, interviews, behind-the-scenes features, photo galleries and videos. SPEED.com Managing Editor Tom Jensen and Automotive Editor Bob Golfen will be anchoring the week’s online coverage.
