The first-ever wedding at a Barrett-Jackson auction and sale of a Corvette for charity came together Wednesday with a round of applause.

Joe and Donna Miller got hitched in the auction’s Showcase Pavilion, surrounded by the most valuable cars at the Scottsdale event. This was an unprecedented happening, with the longtime Barrett-Jackson fans from Severna Park, Md., achieving a long-held dream.

But little did they know that their marriage would turn into such a major event.

“It just snowballed into some kind of extravaganza,” said Joe Miller, a locomotive engineer for the Amtrak railroad. “It’s turned out so great. Everybody I know watches Barrett-Jackson.”

Early Wednesday evening, they were the stars of the SPEED broadcast as they drove a 1974 Chevrolet Corvette T-top coupe onto the auction stage. The special sale benefited the Chip Miller Charitable Foundation in its fight against the rare and often fatal disease amyloidosis.

Chip Miller, co-founder of Corvettes at Carlisle and Carlisle Events in Pennsylvania, died of amyloidosis in 2004. Miller, not related to Joe Miller, was a well-known Corvette and collector-car enthusiast.

“Chip Miller was so important to the Corvette hobby and the old-car hobby,” auction president Steve Davis said as he introduced the charity sale.

The car sold for a strong $47,000, with all the money going directly to the foundation, Davis said. The car was donated by Joe Bataglia of San Diego Classic Muscle Cars.

The catalyst for the joining of the wedding and charity sale was Angela Morsa, founder of the Chip Miller foundation, who is a close friend of Donna Miller. When she learned that they were getting married at Barrett-Jackson, she brought the two events together.

“This is a lot more than we expected,” Donna Miller said after the Corvette sale. “We thought we’d have a quiet little wedding.”

But Joe Miller could barely conceal his excitement.

“This is great. Great!” he grinned. “They made us feel so special.”

And they vowed to return.

“We’ll be back for our one-year anniversary,” he said. “And our second, and our third …”
