If you have your heart set on a hyper-performance 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, start saving those nickels and dimes because it will cost you.

Base price for the GT500 coupe will be just under $55,000, while the convertible version will go for just under $60,000, both including shipping.

That might sound like a lot for a Mustang, but what other 650-horsepower supercar can you get for that price? Answer: none. Load it up with performance goodies and luxury features, and the coupe can get up around $62,000, still something of a bargain considering its commanding performance.

The newest GT500 comes with a supercharged 5.8-liter V8 and standard transmission only, and its performance can be enhanced by a SVT Performance Package for about $3,500. Ford says the aluminum engine, which also produces a maximum torque of 600 pound-feet, is the most powerful production V8 in the world.

The GT500’s base price is essentially the same as that for the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 coupe, also around $55,000 though it is powered by a “mere” 580-horsepower engine. On balance, the base ZL1 comes with a slightly higher level of premium content.

Expect the Shelby GT500 to appear in Ford showrooms this summer.
