Twenty hours of live coverage highlight SPEED’s final Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction of 2012. The event, which starts on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, takes place at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

SPEED and SPEED.com are teaming up for a two-screen experience with this telecast, including the popular Hagerty Fantasy Bid Game, live streaming and on-air interactivity through the SPEED Social Garage.

Bob Varsha (@bobvarsha), whose voice is familiar to Formula One fans, along with automotive author Matt Stone (@MattStoneCars; http://www.mattstonecars.com/), once again head the broadcast booth. On the auction block is car collector Mike Joy (@mikejoy500), the Voice of NASCAR on FOX, and freelance writer and muscle-car expert Steve Magnante (@SteveMags426). Collector-car analysts Rick DeBruhl (@rickdebruhl), Justin Bell (@justinbelltv) and Ralph Sheheen (@ralphsheheen) are looking for event storylines and introducing each Hagerty Fantasy Bid car, while April Rose (@tweetAprilRose) provides unique features and oversees the SPEED Social Garage.

“In Vegas, when you win, it’s immediate and it’s big,” said Rick Miner, SPEED Senior VP of Production, Network Operations and Executive Producer. “There’s nothing like immediate gratification, especially when driving home in your new resto-mod. Not to mention all of the great celebrity cars crossing the block in Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas.”

Viewers can join the SPEED Social Garage at SPEED.com, Facebook or on Twitter via the @BarrettOnSPEED handle, through the #BJA2012 conversational hash tag. In addition to conversing with the on-air team, SPEED.com Editor-In-Chief Tom Jensen (@tomjensen100) and SPEED Automotive Editor Bob Golfen (@BobGolfen) are also answering audience questions and chronicling trends throughout the auction weekend.

Barrett-Jackson’s Las Vegas Auction enters its fifth year, already having established its own identity within the collector-car auction circuit. Much like the glitz and glamour that defines one of the nation’s entertainment capitals; the auction also captures a similar flare.

“The thing that’s impressed me about Vegas is that, right out of the box, from the very first auction, there are really good cars, great people buying and some very solid prices,” DeBruhl said. “It’s got its own personality; one of them is that we see a lot of great customs.”

One of the highlighted vehicles in this year’s Las Vegas auction is an extremely rare, original Hemi-powered 1970 Plymouth Superbird (Lot #670). While a scant 1,920 vehicles were specially built for that model year, only 135 machines were outfitted with a street version of the much-coveted 426 Hemi. Practically speaking, the car was built to compete in NASCAR, luring “The King” Richard Petty back into the manufacturer’s fold, leading to eight victories that season. That success, the car’s unique look and rarity, positioned the Superbird as the No. 1 car on Mike Joy’s “Top-Five Collector Cars with a NASCAR Heritage” in the October automotive-themed issue of NASCAR Illustrated.

Not to be outdone, two spectacular resto-mods are set to cross the auction block at no reserve as well. Lot 662 is a bright yellow, 1962 Chevrolet Corvette built by Custom Cars of Nebraska, powered by a 405-horsepower LS6 crate engine and steadied by fourth-generation Corvette brake and suspension systems. The car also has a modern custom interior, Autometer gauges, a backup camera and navigation.

The other ride is a 1962 Chevrolet Impala SS (Lot 6300) – set to cross the block at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT on Sat., Sept. 22 – and is one of the stars of the entire auction. Constructed at Roger Burnam’s Lakeside Rod & Rides, this green-and-gray machine is angered by an LS2 power plant, limited-slip differential and Flowmaster exhaust. The interior is fully state-of-the-art, customized and ready to go.

The Hagerty Fantasy Bid game, which challenges contestants during SPEED’s live Barrett-Jackson coverage to guess the final price of pre-selected collector cars without going over, offers overall, daily and per car prizing.

Players are awarded points upon the completion of each Fantasy Bid car and daily session. The player amassing the most points throughout Hagerty Fantasy Bidding gameplay is declared the grand prize winner, with runner-up and third-place prizing awarded as well. Daily prizes and per-car prizing are also awarded. Players wanting to create an entry can log onto Hagerty Fantasy Bid.

A 46-inch, high-definition, 3D-compatible Samsung LED television is the overall grand prize, while a 12.2-megapixel Canon EOS SLR Rebel Digital Camera will be awarded to second place overall. The newly released high-definition Kindle Fire, Multi-Touch is set for the third-place overall winner.

There are 18 per-car prizes – a 16-gigabyte Samsung Galaxy Note – available throughout the broadcast while three $500 gas cards are awarded as daily prizing.

Contestants can also enter via mobile device by sending an SMS text message to ‘773333’ (SPEED3) with a ‘fantasy bid’ during applicable bidding times. To place a bid, enter the amount of your bid in dollars without punctuation.

For fans of the Hagerty Fantasy Bid Game, SPEED.com is also rolling out a new gaming platform, where gameplay is set through personal “fantasy leagues” where participants can invite their friends to play along.

Along with trending stories, features and photography at SPEED.com, two additional hours of streaming will be available on Friday, Sept. 21, capturing the auction as it plays out once SPEED wraps up coverage.
