High-performance concept cars powered by electricity or hybrid systems highlighted the auto-show debuts during 2012, a sign of a changing world of technology and sustainability. But there were still plenty of unmitigated displays of dream-car styling and raw power.

Here are 10 of the top show cars and concepts that took us for magic-carpet rides during 2012:

Jeep Mighty FC Concept, an imposing off-roader built to resemble the famed cab-forward Jeeps of the past.

BMW i8 Concept Spyder, from the automaker’s new sustainability brand, an advanced electric sports car that’s slated for production.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell, with an electric motor at each wheel and 740 horsepower, based on the fabulous gullwing-door production SLS.

Lamborghini Urus SUV, which could reveal a future crossover for the Italian supercar builder.

Pininfarina Cambiano, gorgeously rendered by the famed Italian design house, a four-seat plug-in diesel-hybrid.

Infiniti Emerg-e, an extended-range electric sports car built on the chassis of a Lotus Evora.

Lexus LF-LC, a hybrid supercar in both red and a later Opal Blue version, based on the current LFA performance coupe.
