The Toyota FT-86 sports-coupe concept, unveiled officially at the Tokyo Motor Show, is a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru, and it’s being hailed as the reincarnation of the lamented Celica.

With cutting-edge styling and a Subaru four-cylinder boxer engine turbocharged to make between 200 and 250 horsepower, the rear-wheel drive coupe is expected to go on sale in 2011.

Toyota is mum on the details, but a venture with Subaru has been rumored for years. The FT-86 was first revealed earlier this month, but the Tokyo show marks its public debut.

The horizontally opposed Subaru engine, a trademark of the Japanese automaker, allows the compact Toyota to maintain a low profile while providing strong power to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.

Driving enthusiasts who have mourned the loss of such sporty Toyotas as the rear-drive Celica and the high-performance Supra, as well as the brand’s descent into the mainstream, are calling the FT-86 a worthy successor to those moderately priced cars.
